Genetics

The subdivision of Genetics at the Department of Biology is situated on the main campus of University of Tabriz, and holds a leadership position in Iran and as a premier center for molecular genetics and genomics research and education.

The third Genetics master program in Iran was stablished in 2005 at the University of Tabriz. The department also developed Molecular genetics PhD program in 2011. Thanks to the distinguished academic members and their research teams, over 500 articles have been published in peer-reviewed prestigious journals so far.  The section of Genetics consists of 7 laboratories including Molecular genetics labs, cell and molecular biology lab, cell culture lab, genetic engineering lab, molecular biology and genomics lab, providing comprehensive services in molecular genetics, genetic engineering & biotechnology, human genetics, cell culture and bioinformatics.

Having facilities and instrumentations like Real-time PCR, gradient and classic PCR sets, different types of electrophoresis sets, chemical and laminar hoods, cold room, cell culture lab sets and many others, the main focus of research teams of the genetics section are anticancer assessment of phytochemical compounds, investigating the role of non-coding RNAs in chronic malignancies such as cancer & neurodegenerative diseases, employment of CRISPR/Cas9 system on cancer and stem cells, study of the role of pathogenic mutations in genetic diseases, evaluating the biomarker potential of circulating entities in tumor diagnosis and prognosis, and in silico NGS data analysis.
