Biochemistry

The Biochemistry subdivision have a set of educational and research spaces that provide techniques and instrumentation for practical courses of undergraduate students and for master and PhD students which work on their thesis. Also, some Postdoctoral researchers are doing their research projects in the different spaces of biochemistry laboratory. Research studies in this laboratory are performed in the following main areas.

1.         Enzymology (structural and kinetic studies)

2.         Development of artificial enzymes based on nanostructures and metal-organic frameworks (MOF) with the aim of application in industry and medicine

3.         Culturing different cancer cell lines and targeted cytotoxicity and drug delivery studies to find possible ways to treat cancer

4.         Studies of the interaction between biological macromolecules (proteins and DNA) with drugs and natural compounds

5.         Gene cloning, extraction and assay of recombinant proteins as well as protein engineering

6.         study on nervous system disease (Molecular mechanism and evaluation of the effects of drugs, medicinal plants and pure natural compounds on the nervous system diseases: study at the level of patients, animal models, cell lines and invitro experiments

7.         Synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles in different sizes by chemical method and the green synthesis

8.         Bioinformatics studies (meta-analysis, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation)

Techniques and instruments which are used in the Biochemistry laboratory: Culture room facilities with incubator equipped with temperature and CO2 controller, Bacterial culture incubator with an ability to reduce culture temperature to less than 5 °C, thermocycler for PCR reaction, protein and nucleic acids electrophoresis in different sizes, Freezer -80, laboratory fume hood, digital gram/µg scales, falcon and microtube centrifuge, ultrasonic baths sonicator, western blotting equipment, assay of the enzymes activity and metabolites with spectrophotometer.
