Roghaieh Khakpay is currently Associate Professor of Physiology (Medical Physiology) in the Animal Biology Department, Natural Sciences Faculty of the University of Tabriz. She has served as a faculty member at the University of Tabriz for 10 years. In 1998, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Shiraz University. She was ranked 4th volunteer in the entrance exam for the master's degree of Animal Biology. In 2001, she received her Master of Science in Animal Physiology at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. Also, she was selected as the first rank student among Animal Biology students in the Biology Department. She taught physiology and animal biology at the Payam Noor University of Tabriz and Ardestan Payam Noor University for three years afterward.

Roghaieh earned her Ph.D. in Physiology (Medical Physiology) from the Tarbiat Modares University, in Tehran, in 2010, under the supervision of Prof. Saeed Semnanian. In her thesis research, she used the Behavioral (Formalin Test), Molecular (RT-PCR), and Electrophysiological (Patch Clamp) techniques for studying the role of neurosteroid 17β-estradiol in the inflammatory pain modulation by Locus Coeruleus Nucleus of male rats. In addition to her Ph.D. thesis research, she completed two research projects funded by Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) and Islamic Azad University-Shahroud Branch.

After starting her Ph.D., Roghaieh received a scholarship from the University of Tabriz, in 2005, for her Ph.D. She earned another scholarship from Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, for her nine months sabbatical training, in 2009. Thus, she immediately moved to Leipzig in Germany to conduct her sabbatical work in the Rudolf-Boehm-Institut für Pharmakologie und Toxikologie, Medizinische Fakultät, Universität Leipzig. In the Rudolf-Boehm-Institut, she spent her sabbatical training in the lab of Prof. Peter Illes, working on presynaptic patch recordings from locus coeruleus neurons. Finally, she obtained a 6-month sabbatical grant from the Medizinische Fakultät of Universität Leipzig. Collectively, these experiences have fueled her long-standing interests focusing on the pain modulatory neural networks in health and disease.

In December of 2011, Roghaieh started her work as Assistant Professor at Animal Biology Department, where she has been since that time. She is a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain, Iranian Society of Physiology and Pharmacology, and Iranian Biology Society. She has extensive training and expertise in the study of the Behavioral, Molecular, and Electrophysiological mechanisms of supraspinal pain modulation with an emphasis on the pathological conditions. Her laboratory has focused on the Behavioral and Molecular study of the neurophysiology of nociception mechanisms in the health and under stress, anxiety and affective disorder conditions. Accordingly, she accomplished a research project funded by the University of Tabriz assessing the interaction of gonadal and central estradiol in supraspinal pain modulation. Also, she is working on another research project funded by the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF).  She is investigating the interaction of orexinergic and endocannabinoid systems in innate fear-induced pain modulation. Recently, she has focused on the effect of social hierarchy level on stress, anxiety, and nociceptive mechanisms. Therefore, she has finished a research project funded by the University of Tabriz exploring the effect of the social hierarchy level of animals on their innate fear perception level. She has set up a variety of approaches such as novel pharmacological interventions, different stress and anxiety induction models, and exercise. Roghaieh Khakpay has been the supervisor of 20 national and international MSC students. Also, she has 26 refereed publications, 11 in ISC and 15 in ISI journals. In 2017, she has been promoted to Associate Professor of Physiology.

In addition to research, Roghaieh is actively involved in teaching cellular, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, and neural physiology as well as zoology to undergraduate degree biology students. Also, she teaches cellular, membrane, and renal physiology as well as behavioral neurophysiology to MSC degree physiology students. She also contributes to the peer review of manuscripts for several national and international journals, as well as grant proposals and reports from some national institutions such as the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) and the National Institute for Medical Research Development (NIMAD).
